2017 is shaping up to be a great year for entertainment, and anime is no exception. Here are my most anticipated anime movies, series, and OVA’s so far. Expect updates throughout the year.
One Piece Film: Gold U.S. Release, January 10-17
The most recent One Piece film gets theater screenings for a limited time. Go see it if you’re a fan and/or want to help support more anime screenings in theaters.
Yu-Gi-Oh: The Darkside of Dimensions U.S. Release, January 27th
After releasing in Japan last April, this new movie set after the classic series will finally make it’s way to the U.S. Moviegoers will be given an exclusive card with their purchased ticket (while supplies last). The booster packs for the movie were released during Comic-Con 2016, and have appeared at different retailers every once in awhile over the past few months. Hopefully they’ll come back again during the week of the movies release. Get these brand new additions to the classic card series while you can! The voice cast of the original dubbed series is also returning.
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga (January 2017, Now airing Fridays at 11:30AM PST on Crunchyroll)
Blue Exorcist gets a new series which follows the Kyoto Impure King arc of the manga. The first series strayed away from the manga at a certain point, going with it’s own story.
Attack on Titan Season 2
The long awaited second season of this beloved series. I hope fans who don’t know the manga aren’t disappointed that it might be a little different than what they’re used to.
Blood Blockade Battlefront Beyond
I just started watching the first season of this series, and it’s been really entertaining. A unique concept, a swingin’ soundtrack, and probably the best anime ending song/animation ever. I hope the second series is just as good if not better. Fans are expecting this series to possibly follow the manga more closely.
One Punch Man 2
The second season to the hit action comedy series. After the phenomenal first season, many can’t wait to see what hilarious antics and high octane action Saitama and Genos have in store for them.
Godzilla Anime Movie
After his return to Japanese theaters with Shin Godzilla (Godzilla: Resurgence in the U.S.), Godzilla comes back again in anime form. Being animated could help make the monster action less limited than it’s live action counterparts.
Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry
The second Fairy Tail movie. Not much is known about it yet other than the title and that it should be released sometime this year.
Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic
Black Butler has become a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s not something I would have ever expected to watch, but it has proven to be a surprisingly entertaining series. This movie adaptation of a manga arc puts our protagonists on a cruise ship fighting against zombies. An interesting premise, to say the least.
Digimon Adventure Tri: Loss
The fourth movie in the Digimon Adventure Tri series. After the last one tugged on the heartstrings of fans all over the world (including me), and this movie starts where it last left us. We may finally get to learn about the true villains and their motivations, while we try to understand what exactly happened to the digital world .
Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!
Possibly a reboot of a part of the first series, or a brand new adventure set in that time. All we have to go off of is a teaser trailer with a portion of a reanimated scene from the very first episode, and a poster. With it being the 20th Pokemon movie, hot off the heels of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration, it could prove to be the very best, that no Pokemon movie ever was.
Resident Evil/Biohazard: Vendetta
The third CG animated Resident Evil movie. These movies aren’t the best, but still they still exceed the quality of the atrocious live action movie series.
Azure Striker Gunvolt OVA
Based on the Megaman-like Nintendo 3DS game series of the same name.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Vento Aureo
The fifth series in the outlandish Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise. After the phenomenal Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable, this series could manage to surpass its predecessor if it gets even crazier, which would be no surprise.
Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe
A Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure spin off starring everyone’s favorite manga artist from Diamond is Unbreakable.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable (Live Action Movie Adaptation)
A live action theatrical version of the recently finished series. By the same director as the Ace Attorney movie.
One Piece: Four Emperor Saga: Whole Cake Island Arc
I read the manga of One Piece and I’m always excited to see new scenes animated. The current arc is no exception. With some great scenes for individual members of the straw hat crew as well as a returning character, it’s already shaping up to be better, and definitely shorter, than the Dressrosa arc.
Dragonball Super: Universe 7 Survival Arc
After some filler, the twelve universe tournament finally starts. After a lot of teasing and foreshadowing, Gohan joins the fray. Other characters joining the fight include Majin Buu, Krillin, Androids 17 & 18, Tien, and Master Roshi! The inclusion of some of these characters comes from the overwhelmingly positive response audiences had to their group fight scene in the movie, Resurrection F.
Tiger Mask W (the rest of the series)
I’m not even a wrestling fan, but I’ve really been enjoying this series. It’s a sequel series to the original Tiger Mask anime of the early 1970’s. There aren’t any crazy powers or outrageous characters like in Ultimate Muscle, but even with being more grounded in reality Tiger Mask W proves to be an entertaining series. Tiger Mask may have also inspired a certain Pokémon from Pokémon Sun & Moon.
